It’s no bigger than a bumblebee, but this plump little bird can always stand out from the crowd. The reason is clear. He wears a one-of-a-kind wine red, deep purple fur, and a shiny snow-white cap.

They are too cute to be true.

Male and female snowy hummingbirds look quite similar. Females have snow-white underparts and a short, straight bill. Their upperparts are also a greenish bronze color. Young birds also share these characteristics.

Snowy hummingbirds are endemic to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and western Panama.

They prefer to live in the canopy, along moist forest edges and in adjacent forest.

Its main diet is the nectar of small flowers of vines, trees and epiphytes. They float and lick the nectar 13 times per second. However, these birds also eat insects and spiders.

The male and female of this hummingbird can mate with up to seven members of the opposite sex during the breeding season.

After finding a mate, females build their nests on a small twig or vine. This nest is made of plant fibers and spider webs and is cup-shaped. The female then lays 2 eggs in her nests, incubates them for about 2 weeks, and feeds the chicks until they are fully grown.
