When Maisy was adopted, her family was solely interested in using her to be a breeding machine. But after multiple failed attempts, they learned that she couldn’t get pregnant. So they decided to put her to sleep because she was suddenly too expensive to feed and was “so ugly that no one would want her.”
Once Maisy’s original family found out that she wouldn’t be able to fulfill her intended purpose, she suddenly became an unnecessary expense. Not that they had been showing her much love before that point, anyway.
Instead, they left her all alone outside with minimal human contact. She spent the first three years of her life deprived of basic care and affection. Then, Maisy’s former family came to the conclusion that they should euthanize her because she’s “so ugly” no one else could possibly want her.
Luckily, she was taken in by a rescue and spayed a few days later. It turns out that she had a severe case of pyometra (an infection of the uterus). This is common in dogs used for backyard breeding. Without immediate and aggressive treatment, pyometra is painful and life-threatening.
The infection in Maisy’s uterus was so severe the poor dog was about to go septic. If she didn’t have immediate surgery, she surely would have died a preventable death. But Maisy was strong and managed to pull through. Just one week later, her new mom fell head over heels in love with her and took her to her new forever home.
