The Mystery of Fish Living at Depths of Nearly 8,000m Below the Ocean Floor

The snail fish Pseudoliparis swirei was found by scientists at a depth of 7,966 m under the Mariana Trench, the world’s deepest ocean trench in the western Pacific Ocean. This species of snail fish has the ability to withstand pressure equivalent to 1,600 elephants pressing on it.

Scientists officially confirmed that the new species of snail fish is called Pseudoliparis swirei, discovered at a depth of 7,966 m under the Mariana Trench, the world’s deepest ocean trench in the western Pacific Ocean.

This fish looks quite strange with its pinkish color and transparent body to the point where its liver can be seen from the outside. They are about 28.8 cm long and weigh about 160 g.

The snailfish Pseudoliparis swirei is a predator in certain terrains of the Mariana Trench, feeding on small crustaceans in deep water and living in association with larger predators.

The fish that lives at the deepest depths of the ocean may be different from people’s common image of undersea creatures. Living at this depth, Pseudoliparis swirei fish often have a very different shape, especially they have no scales, no large teeth, and no bioluminescence.

They have some unusual adaptations when living in dark and high-pressure environments, so the fish have some characteristics such as: transparent skin lacking pigment, some organs and eggs are enlarged, and muscles are thinner. , the liquefied bones (especially the skull) are incomplete, there appears to be little or no vision, there are mechanisms that allow proteins in the fish’s body to remain active, and differences in the cellular array cells to maintain the flexibility of Pseudoliparis swirei fish.

This is just one of two species of snailfish discovered during expeditions under the Mariana Trench. Scientists caught a total of 37 Pseudoliparis swirei fish and recorded one swimming at a depth of 8,178 m in the sea.

However, they have not caught a single individual of the remaining species but have only recorded them at the same depth. Their bodies look so soft that they have been compared to a piece of tissue paper being dragged underwater.

In a study on adult females, it was found that the eggs of this fish are unusually large, with a diameter of up to 9.4 mm. In total, there are up to 23 large eggs in each female interspersed with smaller eggs, about 850 in number. In eggs, even large eggs, there is no embryonic development in the egg.

This fish can withstand water pressure equivalent to 1,600 elephants. This extreme pressure is also the reason why scientists believe that fish cannot live at depths exceeding 8,200 m, even though the deepest point of the Mariana Trench, also the deepest point in the ocean, is up to 11,000 m.
